Bongiovi DPS iOS App End of Life Statement

Since 2011, the Bongiovi DPS App has provided amazing sound to many thousands of iOS users. Upon its release, Bongiovi DPS was the first iOS app to offer a fully customized listening experience by processing audio and video files in the user’s media library. The magic is performed by the patented Bongiovi Digital Power Station audio optimization algorithm.

However, most users now prefer to stream media to their iOS device. Keeping a large library of music files is no longer the norm and Apple only allows custom audio processing of media stored locally on a device. This limits the content that can receive the benefits of DPS processing.

Additionally, some devices running the final release version of iOS 9 do not allow the Bongiovi DPS app to function properly. So, after careful consideration, we have decided the Bongiovi DPS iOS app will no longer be made available in the Apple App Store. If you have installed Bongiovi DPS in the past, it will remain available for download in your App Store purchases.

So how can you continue the get the Bongiovi DPS audio experience on your iOS device?

Get the jetAudio Music Player! Bongiovi Acoustics and jetAudio have integrated DPS audio processing into this full featured music player. All audio profiles that were available in the Bongiovi DPS app are now available in the jetAudio player.  Touch here to learn how to get DPS via in app upgrade within the jetAudio Music Player.

During the past four years, Bongiovi Acoustics has expanded availability of the Digital Power Station algorithm. Now developers may integrate the Bongiovi DPS SDK audio processing library into their applications to provide a premium listening experience. This Software Development Kit (SDK) is available for Android, iOS, Windows and Linux.

Bongiovi Acoustics will continue to support the DPS Plugin software for Windows and Mac computers. In the future, Bongiovi DPS audio processing will be available in streaming music players, new smart devices and even more consumer electronics. By focusing on providing high quality integration options instead of supporting consumer facing mobile applications, the Bongiovi sound will become even more ubiquitous.

CES 2013 and DPS Demobuds

Why City Profiles?

So perhaps you have looked in the Settings page of the Bongiovi DPS app and wondered why there are a list of Cities under a menu called Headphones?  Allow us to explain...

What is a DPS Profile?

The DPS sound enhancer uses a system of “Profiles” which contain settings that optimize audio for a specific device or a range of devices. Each device, whether it is your built-in speaker, your iPod dock, or your earbuds have very different audio capabilities. The DPS technology uses information in the profile to re-master audio in real-time to suit your listening device.  Each profile is created by hand by Bongiovi Acoustics audio engineers who have years of experience recording music and making the movie soundtracks you enjoy.  We do the hard audio work so you don't have to!

Why City Profiles?

We understand you may have a listening device that is not in the default profile list or on the Bongiovi Acoustics website.  That is why we created the City profiles so you may take the DPS Road Trip.  Each City profile works very well on a wide range of devices including all types of headphones or earbuds as well as iPod docks and mobile speakers.  Try them all...your ears will know which one to call home.  Listening to music is a personal emotional experience.  You know you have chosen the right profile when that experience is better for YOU!

Where can I download more Profiles?

New profiles may be added to your device via the Bongiovi Acoustics website.  Just touch the profile you want then select "Open in Bongiovi DPS".  The profile will then be available in all "Paid" profile lists.

How can I get DPS sound on my laptop or home theater PC?

The DPS audio enhancer is available as a plug-in for Mac and Windows.  All versions are available here with a free trial period.

Kickstarting the Berlin Boombox

We are excited to announce our cooperation with Studio Axel Pfaender in creating great sound for their Berlin Boombox project! This is a really cool, retro-looking cardboard boombox for your iPhone or iPod. We have plenty of experience working with cardboard speakers (see the latest Will it Tune? episode) so we will be creating a custom profile for this unique stereo system. It will be a kit that comes with all high quality cardboard parts as well as a plug-and-go battery powered amplifier and speakers.

This project is being funded by a Kickstarter.com campaign where you can make donations to see their creation come to life in the market. Go check it out and help them reach their goal!

iTunes Match

If you are just getting started with the iTunes Match feature you may be wondering why a lot of your songs are "greyed out" in the Bongiovi DPS player. This has to do with how Apple handles your music once it is in the "cloud".

When you are on your computer, iTunes Match streams your music, in real time, from the Apple cloud. This is not the case for Apple mobile devices...

When you enable iTunes Match on your iPhone, iPad or iPod, all Matched songs are removed from your device during the update. However, they still appear as usual in the Music app. Because only Apple apps (like the Music app) have permission to fetch your music from the cloud, the Bongiovi DPS app and others can see the songs are available, but cannot access them.

When you play a Matched song in the Music app, it is downloaded to your device where it stays just as a song normally would when you sync it. Only after the song is downloaded to your device can the Bongiovi DPS app play it.

Basically the Bongiovi DPS app is only allowed to play media that is physically on your device. If Apple changes the rules for this we will certainly make sure DPS is compatible with all the features available to us. Please visit the DPS Insider forums or our Help Pages if you have any questions.
